is the art of rapping. mc stands for of and that is exactly what were. early rappers were simplyhmm... MCing is the art of rapping. MC stands for ‘master of ceremonies’, and that is exactly what MC’s were. Early rappers were simply there to host the party. In the early days of hip hop the DJ was the main attraction. Hip Hop started when DJ Kool Herc came to New York, from Jamaica in 1970. Herc invented the ‘break beat’, which allowed for easier dancing because of a continuos beat. Kool Herc brought with him, from Jamaica, a style of talking over tracks called ‘toasting’. DJ’s had been toasting over reggae rhythms in Jamaica for several years and Herc copied this style and while playing sets would pump up the crowd by shouting things like, “Throw your hands in the air / and wave them like you just don’t care!” This was known as ‘rapping to the crowd’. Kool Herc invited his friends Coke La Rock and Clark Kent to MC for him while he cut up break beats, and this became the first rap group, called Kool Herc and the Herculiods. Other groups started copying the Herculiods and the rest is hip hop history. At first the raps were simple, but as time pasted groups had to evolve their styles to stay ahead of the rest. Some MC’s started doing a style called beat-box, by vocally copying the sounds that a DJ could make on the turntables. Beat-boxing is considered the hardest thing an MC can do, and only a handful of MC's have mastered the beatbox. MC’s soon became the the headliners at shows and people would come to clubs and parties to hear different groups and MC’s battle each other with rhymes. ‘Freestyling’ was the most popular form of finding out who was the best rapper. MC’s would make up lyrics on the spot, which where often offensive to the person they were battling. Nowadays MC’s raps are very intricate and a lot more complicated than the simple ‘rock the crowd’/ throw your hands in the air’ raps of the late 1970’s and early 80’s. "B-Boys get DOWN!!!" Breaking or breakdancing started in the late 1960’s, early 70’s. DJ Kool Herc took a James Brown song called the ‘Good Foot’ and looped it on the ‘break’ beat so that dancers could have a continuos rhythm to dance to. The ‘good foot’ was the first freestyle dance that incorporated moves involving drops and spins. As D.J.s invented new ways to stretch the break beats in the records, dancers had more time to invent and experiment. Soon moves like dropping down to the ground and poppin up again on beat became standard. DJ Kool Herc coined the term b-boy around the mid seventies to describe the people that danced this new style. In the middle of his sets he would get on the mic and yell “B-boys go down!” to signal the crown to clear the way for the breakers. People still aren’t sure what Herc meant, but the term b-boy is still used today and most people think it means ‘break boy.’ In Brooklyn a new step inspired by these drops was being developed and called ‘Brooklyn Rock’ also known as ‘Uprocking’. Once the first early break moves had been established, a definite style began to develop. B-boy moves: a headspin above / a freeze below (a stall in the midle of a move) Breaking evolved further when people from South American countries began to incorporate capoiera, a local fight/dance style, into uprocking. Also, Bruce Lee and other Kung Fu film stars had a major influence on b-boying culture. The popularity of Kung Fu films during the mid and late 70s around the world and especially in New York City, has had a great impact on b-boying style. Breakdancing groups like The Rock Steady Crew, and the New York City Breakers emerged. These crews would battle each other in night clubs and try to win contests by having the newest and hardest moves. what is b-boyin? bboyin is one of the four main elements of hip hop culture. the media has labeledWhat is B-boyin? Bboyin is one of the four main elements of Hip Hop culture. The media has labeled it "breakdancing", but this term is not correct. The proper terminology is Break Boy, Beat Boy, or Boogie Boy. The word B-boy is used loosely, but a B-boy is not just a hip hop fan, they are dancers. When did it originate? It originated as a danceform in the early 1970's. Where did it originate? It originated in the South Bronx area of New York City. B-boyin was done at parties and outdoor jams. Some say it's early roots came from other dance forms in Harlem & Brooklyn. How did it evolve? In the early 1970's, it was focused mainly on uprock styles and finesse. There was very little footwork involved. After this period, it phased out. In the late 70's early 80's it was revived by the new generation. The dance became more spectacular with the introduction of power moves combined with floor rocking. What are power moves? Power moves are spins and combination moves that are more acrobatic and involve a great deal of strength. Are they important? To an extent, but the real core of breakin is in flavor and the artistic characteristics of dance. The new generations of B-Boys must remember that the true essence lies in style, art, and character rather than acrobatics. What are some of the dance styles that make up B-boyin today? * Top Rocking (introduction) * Footwork (patterns done with leg manuevers) * Freezes (sudden stops and finishing of moves) * Power moves (spins & acrobatics) * Brooklyn Uprocking & Burning (taunting warlike dance made at an opponent) * Locking (Funk dance created by Don Cambell) * Popping (robotic, mime type of dance) * Other styles of Boogaloo Does Breakin involve physical training? Yes, as in many other dance forms, it does require physical training. Breakin is a strenuous artform, that requires the body to defy gravity and perform feats of incredilble flexibility and endurance. Who were some of the first B-boy & Rockin crews? Just to name a few; RockSteady, RockWell Assoc., Floor Masters, New York City Breakers, Dynamic Rockers, Scramblin Feet, Magnificent Force, Incredible Breakers, Dynasty Rockers, Dynamic spinners, SalSol, etc... Did Breakin evolve from gangs? Usually those who did dirt stuck to dirt. Those who wanted some form of positive and recreational activity got involved with the dance. Some gang members became dancers and set trends for all of hip hop. Is it a cultural dance? Yes it is, but unfortunately many people do not know or understand the roots, heritage, triumphs, fallbacks, and the upliftment of the dance. How does breakin mix with boogieing & locking? Breakin is the acrobatical component of B-boyin. Poppin, boogie, and locking are miming, robotic, freestyle dancforms. These dances are were developed before the era of breakin. Disco and funk are the main types of music these dances are performed to. People often confuse them, but they are distincly different danceforms. What music is danced to? Breakbeats, which are segments of a record that highlight the drummer. The art of lengthening breakbeats into one steady track was created by early Dj's. Who gave the dance the name B-boyin? DJ Kool Herc from the Herculoids. He was one of the early Dj's in the Bronx. Were there other Dj's? Yes, of the most popular in those days were: Afrika Bambaataa, DJ Hollywood, and Grand Master Flash. There were many others, but that is a whole other element. Why was the dance considered a fad or wrong to do? Because of the ignorance and exploitation. Many people even within the Hip Hop community, considered B-boyin a passing thing. In the 1980's the media hyped up the acrobatics of the dance, exploited it, and then played it out. As a result many people gave it up. Others just quit because they could not keep up with the complexity of the moves or style. Nonetheless, breakin is a deep form of expression. And like all other artforms, will continue to evolve and thrive. Despite criticism, many true original masters continue to push for the recognition of the dance and pass it on to the youth as a positive form of discipline. This is just a brief summary on the art, history, and mechanics of B-boyin. Future lessons will go into greater detail on this art that stretches so far from east to west and around the world. "My favorite artist was James Brown. That's who inspired me ... When I came over here I just put it in the American style and a perspective for them to dance to it. In Jamaica all you needed was a drum and bass. So what I did here was go right to the 'yoke'. I cut off all anticipation and played the beats. I'd find out where the break in the record was at and prolong it and people would love it. So I was giving them their own taste and beat percussion-wise ... cause my music is all about heavy bass ..." - Kool Herc DJing exists in many types of popular music, but the DJ is especially important in the hip hop world. The DJ is the person that keeps the party going, he is the one responsible for lacing down dope beats that the MC’s can rhyme over. The first hip hop DJ was Kool Herc. In 1973, Herc was asked to DJ a party for a relative. During his set he would use two turntables and switch from record to record without cutting the music. Kool Herc was the first to use a continuos mix of music. Herc also invented the break-beat by cutting together two samples of James Brown’s hit, ‘Get on the Good Foot’. The break beat allowed dancers to have a continuos rhythm to step to. Soon Herc was doing this cutting from record to record to invent different ‘breaks’ The way Herc mixed the records was very rudimentary and often at times he was guessing about where and when to switch records. In 1974, this all changed when a DJ named Pete Jones uses a toggle switch, so that he can change which record he hears through his headphones. This made him able to match beats better and made the transitions between beats a lot smoother. DJ mixers were soon produced that had this toggle switch for headphones as well as a crossfader that allowed seamless crosses between records. In 1977 a DJ known as Grand Wizard Theodore invented the most popular technique used by DJ’s in the hip hop world today. The ‘scratch’, so the story goes, was invented while Theodore was practicing in his room. His mother came in and while she talked to him, Theodore stopped the record by laying his hand on it. She continued talking and he started moving his hand back and forward over the record. This was the birth of the scratch. Theodore began using the scratch over other records while they played and the scratch became an instant success. DJ Kool Herc DJ tools: 2 turntables and a mixer DJing is not much more than that. It has evolved some over the past twenty years, but basically is just cutting up beats and dropping scratches. Certain techniques for mixing are common, but most DJ’s know that they have to find there own style that works for them. DJing, however, is not as easy as it sounds. In fact it takes years to master just a simple scratch. The DJ is a highly coveted position in the hip hop community. Good DJ’s are paid very well to perform their talents and no rapper is any good on stage without an equal as good DJ behind him.

... graffiti is the street art of hiphop. to many, the writing all over buildings and public... Graffiti is the street art of HipHop. To many, the writing all over buildings and public places in most of America’s major metropolitan areas is nothing more than vandalism, and well...alot of it is. But graffiti is a big part of hip hop culture, and though a sharpie scribbled on a subway wall may not be art, many of the ‘graf’ heads that practice graffiti are true artists. Graffiti has been around for as long as humans can write. The word graffiti comes from the ancient Greek work graphien, meaning; to write. The first graffiti was done by prehistoric man on the walls of the caves they lived in, often in symbolic pictures to tell the story of a hunt or a long voyage. Thousands of years later graffiti was used to spread anti-political messages. Guerilla activists would sprawl a message in huge letters in public areas in hopes that people would recognize their cause. Graffiti as we all know it in the 21st century began with a man named Keith Harring, Harring was an artist and to promote himself and his work he would plaster posters of his unique drawings in subways and other highly trafficked places. Soon instead of using posters he would just draw directly onto the walls. This was the beginning of graffiti art. But wait...what about the scribbled words that are so common in big cities? Well those words are called ‘tags.’ And though tagging is the least artistic form of graffiti it is also what popularized the art. Tagging began in Philly in the 1960’s, but wasn’t popularized till it made its way to New York City. In 1971, The New York Times published an article on a person named TAKI 183. Taki 183 was a tag that first showed up in a Washington Heights neighborhood, but soon was all over the city. The Times traced the tag to a foot messenger whose nickname was Taki, and 183 was the number of the street where he lived. Taki 183 would tag the buildings where he delivered messages and also write his tag in the subway, the way he got around. Though there were other people doing the same thing as Taki 183, the Times article gave credit to him, and soon thousands of kids began duplicating Taki’s tag in there own name. This became known as ‘bombing.’ Kids would tag the places they where at with markers at first, but then moved on to spray paint. The object was to ‘bomb’ as many places as possible, therefore having your tag be the most respected. Soon subways and back allies were filled with tags. ‘Graf’ writers soon realized that just having the most tags was not enough to stay recognized. This was the beginning of tag style. Writers began using unique ways of writing to keep there fame. Different scripts where used in different parts of New York City and soon one writer was able to know were another writer was from just by his or her tag style. This was the next step in the evolution of graffiti. Taggers from different areas began to link up, much like breakdancers did, into crews. These crews would find the best places to tag, trying to make them the biggest and most elaborate they could get. Spray paint became the tool of choice for these graf crews. The standard spray nozzle for a can would only spray in thin lines an the graffers could not get the desired effect out of the spraypaint so, kids began removing the nozzles and replacing them with nozzles from other aresol products that would change the way the paint came out. Writers sprayed the names of there crews in block letters which they would fill with unique designs. These deigns then started to appear outside the letters and often became more important than the words. By this point tagging had metamorphosed into something far more artistic. These new elaborate deigns were called ‘pieces.’ Writers realized that by bombing the sides of subway cars with pieces, their work would travel around the city and be seen by everybody. Soon the entire sides of the cars where taken up by by pieces stretching from top to bottom and side to side. Some of these pieces would take hours to complete and the crews that did them would often break into train yards in order to have enough time to finish. The first top to bottom ‘masterpiece’ as it was called is attributed to one person, named SUPER KOOL 223. Graffiti art peaked in the early 1980’s and the cities would pay thousands of dollars to clean up graffiti, but the art never died. Graffers soon stopped writing words and tags and would just spray unique pictures and designs. Many graf artists became legitimate commercial artists. From its early beginnings in Philly and New York, graffiti spread across the nation. In the 1990’s Europe had a surge of graffiti artists and pieces would show up all over Dutch and German cities. As an art form graffiti still exists and a new graf artist is born everyday, however it is unlikely that it will ever see the popularity it saw in the late 1970’s and early 1980’s. Of the four elements of hip hop, graffiti is the only one not linked to music . Why hip hopers grasped onto graffiti as a form of expression is unknown. Perhaps it is because just like MCing is about getting your ‘props’ and being the illest lyricist, the goal of graffiti is having the best most elaborate style. Graffiti-ul, dupa cum bine se stie, exista din cele mai vechi timpuri, chiar dinaintea grotei lui lascaux, insa forma sa urbana a aparut mult mai tarziu, ea coloreaza in ziua de azi orasele mari din intreaga lume. In 1971 poza unui tag-er 'Taki 183' a aparut in cunoscutul ziar new-yorkez "TIMES",care vorbeste pentru prima oara despre tag.Tag-ul este acea semnatura data in cat mai multe loiuri publice nu pentru a agasa ci ca expresie a unei arte libere lipsite de interdictii si limite, un fel de joc care se dadea intre diferitele cartiere new-yorkeze dupa anii 60. La inceputul anilor 70 acest joc a aparut pe vagoanele de metrou aerian care mergeau intre Bronx si Brooklin. De la simplele taguri s-a trecut cu timpul la desene, graffiti, pe toata lungimea si inaltimea vagoanelor. Tag-ulsi graff-ul in principiu inseamna 'ati afirma numele tau'.Competitia dintre graff-eri a generat creerea diferitelor stiluri, literele in trei dimensiuni au aparut. In hangarele metrourilor nepazite primii 'graffiti-artists' acopereau vagoanele cu litere de neinteles in culori demente. Odata cu aparitia desenelor pe pereti facute de diferiti writeri a aparut un nou tip de pictura 'aerosol art' care sa dezvoltat dupa 1980 odata cu cultura rap. Gratis, doar ca un sport, writerii din New-York vor semana virusul 'graffiti' in toata lumea. Primele orase europene in care acest 'virus' a emigrat au fost Amsterdam (1983), Londra si Paris (1984). Amsterdamul remane la un nivel inalt pana in ziua de azi, in anul 1983 pasionatul de arta Yaki Kornblit a adunat crema graff-arilor new-yorkezi: Blade, Blast, Crash, Daze, Dondi, Seen si multi altii la un concurs de graffiti la Praga. Presa a incurajat tinerii din Praga sa faca graffiti.Tag-ul este o semnatura dar in acelasi timp si un desen facut din litere. Tag-ul este recompensa dupa o munca grea, este cireasa de pe tort, orice writer umple paginile caietelor cu tagul sau pentru a-l invata bine si apoi il da pe pereti. Tagurile sunt adesea insotite de cifre care se citesc in engleza, limba oficiala a acestei arte. De exemplu cifra 1 indica faptul ca writerul este primul care foloseste acest tag, sau cifra 4 aflata intre doua tag-uri se citeste 'for' si se foloseste pentru a dedica ceva altui writer. Inafara de cifre se mai folosesc si semne de punctuatie cum ar fi ghilimele, puncte sau sageti pentru a iesi in evidenta. Cei care au tag-ul mai mare si-l prescurteaza folosind doar primele doua litere. Graffiti-urile se impart in trei mari categorii: tag, throw-up si fresca sau 'pieces'. Letrajele si stilurile depind de fiecare writer in parte. Throw-up inseamna a vomita in jargon american. Facut intr-o singura culoare si trasat fara contur, literele throw-up-ului sunt pline. Throw-up-ul este un tag foarte gros, el este plasat intotdeauna in cele mai la vedere locuri, unde writerii invata sa riste, pentru ca aceasta arta reprezinta inainte de toate un risc pentru cei care o practica, ea fiind declarata ilegala si trecuta in randul vandalismelor. Fresca sau piesa justifica numele de 'graffiti-artists' dat autorilor, ele sunt desenate mai intai pe foi inainte de a fi facute pe pereti sau orce alta suprafata. Piesele sunt in primul rand rezultatul muncii unui intreg grup de writeri in care fiecare are o sarcina:trasarea schitei pe perete, desenarea personajelor, colorarea lor, etc. Toti graff-arii la inceput imprumuta frecvent literele altor graffari consacrati, dar cu tinpul ei evolueaza in asi creea un stil personal. Trei stiluri majore se disting: -Block-letter compuse din litere clare si netede; -Semi-wild stile literele intra una in alta dar sunt usur de recunoscut; -Wild stile (salbatic) literele sunt complet 'salbatice', nebunesti si intelese doar de anumiti initiati; Un crew sau mai bine spus un grup de grafferi se creeaza in timpul unei plimbari nocturne, cand graffarii intra in contact unii cu altii la adapostul intunericului. Ei sunt o banda de baieti animati de graffiti, ce doresc sa spuna ceva, sa-si faca un stil, sa fie mai buni ca alte crew-uri. Logo-ul unui grup este format de obicei din trei litere: TNI(The Next Invasion), TGV(The Graff Virus), STC(Stoned Tipsy Crew), etc. In graffiti exista trei reguli dupa care se ghideaza writerii (bineinteles nu toti le respecta): 1.Niciodata sa nu cumperi bombele din magazine; 2.Sa desenezi numai in locurile neautorizate; 3.Sa ai un stil propriu care sa te diferentieze de ceilalti graff-eri.
